Can a Support Coordinator Manage My Funding?

Short answer: no — Support Coordinators don’t manage your money.
But a good Support Coordinator can help you understand how your plan works, avoid common budget traps, and set things up in a way that keeps you in control.
Who manages NDIS funding?
NDIS funding can be managed in three ways:
1) NDIA-managed (agency-managed)
The NDIA pays providers directly. If a support is NDIA-managed, you can only use registered providers for that support.
2) Plan-managed
A Plan Manager pays invoices and helps track your spending. Plan-managed participants can often use registered or unregistered providers (depending on the support type).
3) Self-managed
You (or your nominee) pay providers and keep records. Self-managed participants can often use registered or unregistered providers (depending on the support type), and may have more flexibility to negotiate pricing.
Important: your plan can be mixed
You can have a combination of NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed across different budgets or support types. What matters is how each funding area (and sometimes specific line items) are managed — because that affects provider choice and admin requirements.
What a Support Coordinator can do (without managing your money)
We can support you to:
- understand your budgets and how long they need to last
- understand how your funding areas are managed (and what that means for registered/unregistered providers)
- build a simple plan for spending across the year so you don’t get caught out
- work with your Plan Manager (if you have one) so invoicing and reporting stays clear
- spot early warning signs (overspend, underspend, supports not matching goals)
- prepare for reassessment by tracking what’s working, what isn’t, and what evidence is needed
Price limits (simple explanation)
NDIA-managed, plan-managed and self-managed supports generally must follow NDIS price limits.
Self-managed participants are still responsible to make sure spending is reasonable and the funding lasts.
Admin detail that can catch people out
For some support types, there may be extra steps in the NDIA system (for example, recording/endorsing certain providers) before claims can be processed. We help you understand those steps early so supports don’t get delayed.
The goal: more confidence, less dependence
We can also give you practical tools so you can manage more of your plan independently over time — like how to read budget reports, what to ask providers, and how to keep agreements and invoices clean.

Use clear service agreements, track spending regularly, plan for higher-cost periods, and address issues early (like cancellations, travel charges, or unexpected reporting costs). It’s important to set a budget at the beginning of the plan to reduce the risk of funding running out early- this is especially important with funding periods.
