Can a Support Coordinator Recommend Providers?

Yes — a Support Coordinator can recommend providers. 

But good Support Coordination doesn’t feel like being told what to do. It should feel like having clarity, options, and support to choose what fits you. 

What ethical provider recommendations look like 

A Support Coordinator should:

- ask what matters to you (not assume) 

- provide real options (not a single “preferred provider”) 

- explain the pros/cons of each option 

- support you to choose and trial what feels right 

Matching providers to the person, not just the support. At Nolastray Support, we look at more than availability. 

We help match providers based on: 

- your goals and support needs 

- communication preferences 

- cultural fit and values 

- consistency and reliability 

- experience with writing certain reports  

- experience with complexity (if needed) 

We can also help you develop a participant profile you can share with new providers so you don’t have to start from zero every time. 

Registered vs unregistered providers (don’t waste time on providers you can’t use) 

Before you choose a provider, you need to confirm how that support is managed:

- NDIA-managed (agency-managed) supports require registered providers. 

- Plan-managed and self-managed supports can often use registered or unregistered providers, with some exceptions depending on the support type. 

A Support Coordinator should help you check this before you commit. 

Service agreements (providers write them; we help you understand them):

Providers create service agreements, but we can help you negotiate key terms like:

- cancellation windows and notice periods 

- travel charges 

- reporting costs 

- communication expectations 

- what happens if support isn’t working and you need to change providers 

Remember: There is No one-size-fits-all 

Sometimes the “standard pathway” doesn’t work — waitlists, service gaps, or provider fit issues can derail things fast.
